Top Leader Gathering — Using the Logic of a Listed Company to Become an Industry Leader

Centred on the theme “Using the Logic of a Listed Company to Become an Industry Leader,” the gathering explored a question increasingly relevant to established entrepreneurs: once a company has learned how to generate revenue and profit, how does it evolve into an organisation that can scale, operate systematically and build lasting enterprise value?

Top Leader Gathering was initiated by Top Leader Magazine to extend leadership learning beyond daily content and into meaningful face-to-face engagement. It creates an intimate environment where entrepreneurs can exchange perspectives, build relationships and examine not only the challenges facing their businesses today, but also what those businesses could become five or ten years from now.

Bring together people worth knowing, and let every meaningful connection become the beginning of greater possibilities.

Dr Jodness Tan: Beyond Making Money, Leaders Must Build Enterprise Value

The gathering opened with remarks by Dr Jodness Tan, Editor-in-Chief of Top Leader Magazine, Secretary-General of the Asia Excellence Entrepreneur Federation (AEEF), and Executive Director of a Malaysian listed company.

Dr Jodness invited entrepreneurs to consider a deeper question beyond profitability:

A company may be profitable today, but can it continue generating value five or ten years from now? And if its founder eventually steps away, how much of that value will remain?

He observed that many entrepreneurs spend ten or twenty years building successful businesses, increasing revenue and expanding their teams, only to discover that customer relationships, critical resources, major decisions and organisational knowledge remain heavily dependent on the founder.

When the business cannot function effectively without its founder, its ability to become an independent, transferable and investable enterprise asset remains limited.

This led to one of the key ideas shared during the session: a good business must know how to enter, grow and eventually provide options for exit.

For entrepreneurs, building a company therefore extends beyond bringing revenue into the business. It also means preparing for succession, investment, equity value, institutionalisation and, where appropriate, a future exit.

A valuable enterprise should generate cash flow today while preserving strategic options for its owners tomorrow.

Even If You Never List, You Can Still Think Like a Listed Company

Dr Jodness also emphasised that not every company needs to pursue a public listing.

However, adopting the discipline and perspective associated with listed companies can fundamentally change the questions an entrepreneur asks.

Can the company’s profit model be replicated? Can the organisation function without its founder? Is there a second generation of capable management? Are the financials sufficiently transparent? Can the business model scale? Have the company’s brand, customer base, systems, intellectual property and organisational capabilities become genuine enterprise assets?

And perhaps the most revealing question:

If an investor wanted to invest in your company tomorrow, what exactly would they be paying for?

Once entrepreneurs begin answering that question seriously, the conversation shifts from “How much can this company earn this year?” to “What can this company eventually be worth?”

Prof. Dr. Gan SK Shares the Logic Behind Building a Company for Scale

The highlight of the gathering was a special 40-minute sharing session by Prof. Dr. Gan SK, Founder of Genesis Business School, Director of a Malaysian listed company and internationally certified CEO.

Introducing the guest speaker, Dr Jodness shared that he had known Dr Gan for more than a decade, having witnessed his journey from leading a company towards public listing to subsequently establishing Genesis Business School and working with entrepreneurs on corporate growth and development.

The theme “Using the Logic of a Listed Company to Become an Industry Leader” is also part of an upcoming initiative by Genesis Business School. Its philosophy of developing stronger and more sustainable enterprises closely aligns with the leadership principles championed by Top Leader Magazine, leading to this special session for AEEF past award recipients, members and invited entrepreneurs.

The discussion brought the concept of “going public” back to the fundamentals of business.

As companies move towards a higher level of development, they inevitably need to address profitability, talent, systems, governance, organisational capability, scalability and the ability to continue creating value beyond the founder.

A public listing may be one possible destination. The logic behind building a listing-ready company can be valuable long before that destination is reached.

Where Learning Leads to Connection

Following the sharing session, participants continued the afternoon over refreshments and business networking.

Top Leader Gathering places particular emphasis on genuine interaction among entrepreneurs. Rather than focusing solely on the scale of an event, the gathering is designed to create an environment where business owners can sit together, discuss their experiences and challenges, and connect with people from industries beyond their own.

At a certain stage of entrepreneurship, many breakthroughs are difficult to achieve alone.

A new perspective can change the way a leader sees a longstanding problem. A relationship with someone from another industry may reveal an entirely new market. And an introduction made casually over afternoon tea may, years later, develop into a meaningful business partnership.

The strength of a valuable network is measured not by how many names are in one’s contact list, but by how many capable people are willing to learn, build trust and create value together over time.

Top Leader Gathering: Connecting Leaders Who Can Grow Together

Top Leader Magazine and AEEF – Asia Excellence Entrepreneur Federation will continue to develop platforms for entrepreneurial learning, international engagement, business visits, forums and leadership gatherings, connecting accomplished business leaders across industries and stages of growth.

At the heart of Top Leader is the philosophy:

Cultivate Oneself · Build the Family · Lead the Enterprise · Serve the World

Building a larger company is only one dimension of leadership. A well-rounded leader must continuously elevate personal thinking, strengthen the family, build an enduring enterprise and ultimately use his or her capabilities, influence and resources to create value for a wider society.
